President Buhari Holds Emergency Meeting Over Rivers Election

Reports by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have it that President Muhammadu Buhari may have called an emergency meeting in Abuja over the bloody legislative rerun election in Rivers state.
The party had earlier in the day alleged that the president was already planning to declare a state of emergency in the state following the violence which has marred the election so far.
And in a series of tweets by the party’s official Twitter handle on Sunday evening, President Buhari has assembled some leaders of the National Assembly as well as many other lawmakers on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The meeting may yet be to declare a state of emergency in the state following the killings and unending violence in the south-southern state.

Atiku, Tinubu In Race For APC Bot Chair

Members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) are already forming queues behind former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ahead of tomorrow’s meeting of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Daily Trust on Sunday learnt yesterday.

Sources said the BoT meeting, scheduled to hold at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, would be used to elect both the chairman and secretary of the Board, which is an advisory body of elders and leaders considered as the conscience of the party.

A leader of the APC in Abia State and former National Chairman of the Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA), Chief Sam Nkire, had already declared his interest to become the secretary of the party’s BoT.

The latest development is an indication that the first interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, may no longer be in the APC BoT chairmanship contest.

The APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, confirmed tomorrow’s meeting last Monday after resuming from a 10-day working break.

After the emergence of the BoT chairman, a meeting of the party’s national caucus will follow on Tuesday, March 22, 2016.

Chief Odigie-Oyegun said the meeting of the APC National Executive Committee (NEC), which is the party’s highest decision making organ, will hold on Thursday, March 24, 2016.

Daily Trust on Sunday learnt that the need to fill vacant positions in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) would be ratified at the NEC meeting.

The APC national chairman, who spoke with journalists at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, had said that all arrangements had been concluded to conduct congresses through which a substantive national publicity secretary to succeed Alhaji Lai Mohammed would emerge.

Lover Sets His Girlfriend, Friend Ablaze (pictures)

•Lady dead, friend in hospital

•I mistakenly stepped on petrol keg —Lover

A 28-year-old Togolese, Isah Lamin, who was badly burnt after she was doused with petrol by her boyfriend, Bakare Kabiru, during an argument, has died in the hospital, five days after the incident occurred at Alakia area of Ibadan, Oyo state.

A friend of Kabiru, one Ahmed Muyideen also got badly burnt as he was caught in the fire while trying to pull Lamin up from where she was pushed by her lover during the argument.

Crime Reports learnt that the Togolese, a single mother of two, started dating Kabiru, a tipper driver sometimes in 2015, though the suspect was married and had three children from a former wife.

The lovers reportedly had a misunderstanding on March 13, 2016 at the Tipper Park at Alakia, prompting Kabiru to ask Lamin to go to her residence where she rented.

After she left, Kabiru asked Muyideen who is also a driver to accompany him to a place, only for Muyideen to see that it was Lamin’s residence when they got there.

Crime Reports further gathered that while going, Muyideen had noticed a keg of petrol that the suspect held and had jokingly asked that he should be given the petrol so that he could pour it in his vehicle’s tank. But Kabiru replied that the petrol was for his generating set to enable him watch football.

On arrival at Lamin’s house, a fresh argument broke out between the lovers, resulting in Kabiru slapping the lady. The slap prompted Lamin to hold on to Kabiru’s knickers, while Muyideen made efforts to separate them, castigating his friend for beating a woman.

Smarting from the treatment meted to her by Kabiru, Crime Reports learnt that Lamin held on to his knickers again. The action was said to have earned her a hard punch from her boyfriend, resulting in her falling down beside a stove that a co-tenant was cooking on.

As Kabiru’s friend attempted to lift the lady, Kabiru allegedly splashed a quantity of petrol from the keg he brought to the house on Lamin, igniting both the lady and Muyideen.

Muyideen reportedly rushed out, attempting to tear his burning clothes off while the suspect and sympathisers rushed to save Lamin by pouring water on her.

Crime Reports learnt that Muyideen and Lamin were rushed to a nearby private hospital but Lamin was rejected, with the advice that she should be taken to a better equipped hospital because of the degree of the burns she suffered.

Policemen from Egbeda Division were said to have arrested Kabiru in the hospital premises, while the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, for further investigation on Friday, March 18.

Things however took a different turn when news filtered into the State CID shortly after the case was received that Lamin had died.

Muyideen was said to be receiving treatment in the hospital, though his burns also seemed extensive.

Speaking with Crime Reports on Saturday, Kabiru denied that he deliberately poured petrol on his girlfriend and, inadvertently, his friend, saying that the petrol spewed out when he mistakenly stepped on its container which fell where he put it during the misunderstanding with his girlfriend.

Giving an insight to what led to the fight between him and the deceased, Kabiru said: “Lamin was my girlfriend. We started a relationship in November 2015. She used to hawk a local drink, Kunu, around and we met in the process.

“In February, she told me that she would like to get pregnant for me. I replied her that time was not ripe for such since our relationship was still young and I had yet to know her relations. I said I was not ready.

She insisted that that was what she wanted. Because of this disagreement, she changed towards me and when I noticed this, I reduced my visit to her place.

“On Saturday, March 12, she came to me at our park and informed me that she was going to her parents’ place at Monatan area. She added that she knew I was treating her shabbily because I had already slept with her and was satisfied with that only. She said she would not take it lying low.

On Sunday, March 13, I bought petrol for my generator and mixed it with engine oil. I was in the motor park when she passed by me.

She said was just coming from Monatan. She asked why I greeted her and I asked whether her statement was because of the argument of the previous day.

When she got home, she called me again and started raking. She said I should return her battery phone and DVD with me. It was during this that my friend, Muyideen came to me. I asked him to follow me to Lamin’s house. I also carried my keg of petrol with the intention that I would go home from there. When we got to Lamin’s house, she started making trouble with me and I slapped her. She held on to me. I placed the keg I was holding on a bucket.

“An elderly woman tried to intervene but while on it, Lamin came to hold me again. I pushed her away, unknown to me that the keg I placed on a bucket fell. My friend went to help her up and I wanted to storm off in anger. In the process, I unknowingly stepped on the petrol keg, forcing the stopper off. And because someone was cooking within the house, the petrol.”

17 Year-old Girl Sells Her Baby Girl For N500k

The State Commissioner for Police, Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison said five persons were involved in the case.

According to her, Tessy fell a victim of a specialized child trafficker, Mrs.
Chibuzor Okoye, who convinced her to sell the baby to Mr. and Mrs. Sunday Kalu, who were desperately looking for a baby.

She said the police got a tip about the matter when Tessy’s father, Mr. Henry Obianu, who lives at Ogbese in Akure North Local Government Area of the state reported that his daughter was missing with her pregnancy to the police.

According to her father, Tessy ran away with her pregnancy in January last year but later re-appeared in May without the baby or pregnancy.

After more pressure about the whereabout of the baby from Tessy, she was said to have confessed to one of her uncles that she sold the baby to a couple in Onitsha.

The Police investigation also revealed that Tessy was lured to Onitsha by her father’s neighbour in Ogbese, simply identified as Mr. Jude Azuka.

It was learnt that at the time Tessy was declared missing at home, she was taking to Onitsha by Azuka to Okoye’s house who helped her to nurse her pregnancy until she delivered.

The Police boss said “through investigation to Onisha, the police arrested Okoye, at No. 3, Tonny Olisa street Awada in Onitsha, who specialized in child trafficking.

“It was Okoye, who sold the said baby girl to the couple at No. 8, Uzogwu street Onitsha at the sum of N500,000.

“She claimed to have given Jude the sum of N200,000 out of which Jude claimed to have bought clothes and shoes to Tessy and also gave her N30,000.

“Mrs. Chibuzor thereafter forced Tessy, to sign an undertaking that she would never come back for the baby”.Ibifuro-Harrison, however, urged parents to be wary of the antics of criminal elements, who act friendly around their wards.

Buhari Is Surrounded By Incompetent People, Sycophants– Ango Abdulahi

Spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari has surrounded himself with incompetent sycophants. The former special adviser to ex-president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, made this known, in Zaria, Kaduna State.According to him, the NEF were not happy with the way the president was steering the ship of the country. He advised President Buhari to urgently address the shortcomings of his administration.
The former Vice Chancellor criticised the president, for terminating the appointment of 13 VCs.He said the president’s action was against the law.On the recent sack of the VCs, Abdulahi said, “Well, frankly speaking, university system has been virtually part of all my life. But what is always critically importantfor a country, for its institutions is to be guided by the rule of law. And anything that runs outside the rules, regulations and laws, you find out that the outcome is usually chaos. You see conflict of interest, and so on and so forth.“Yes, historically, all Nigerian universities at the point of their establishment are established by law. The one that I know most is the Ahmadu Bello University, and it has to do with the Office of the Registrar as well as the Office of the Vice Chancellor. And of course, laws, when they are made, at various points in time, there are certain circumstances that need to be reviewed in line with the law to fit such circumstances in the evolution of that institution. And all universities are supposed to have laws and regulations.“To come to this specific and recent happening about the dissolution of governing councils, the need for the sacking of vice chancellors that are in office, I think the resolution of the contentions must be found somewhere in the laws establishing universities, and for me, until recently, I was the Pro-Chancellor, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. I remember very well the most recent university laws that were amended had conferred specific powers on the governing councils of universities to have sole responsibility for the appointment of their principal officers, including the Vice Chancellors.“Before then, usually, the councils play a role up to the point when three names areshortlisted among so many that have shown interest in becoming vice chancellorsof these universities and eventually these three names are sent to the visitor of the university. And the visitor can use his discretion to take any one of the three names regardless of other recommendations that the council may have made in respect to those three.“It was his prerogative to pick any of the three and that’s okay. But in the course ofthe amendment of these laws and particularly with the pressure that was coming from the academic staff over the years, wanting more autonomy, quote and unquote, autonomy for Nigerian universities, and I think associated with the last long ASUU’s strikes, I think the Obasanjo administration acceded to this, if not all, some aspects of university autonomy.“
Buhari should be careful about Nigerian politics especially the politics of the merger of APC, who are in the government to pursue their selfish agenda. Buhari should not be too rigid on permanent friends and enemies. He should be very careful with sycophants both in his cabinet, party and National Assembly.”

I Sold Ifesinachi Ani To Emir Of Zazzau-abductor

· Says he sold the girl
· We’ve no hand in it, says Emir's Secretary

A new twist has crept into the tragic tale of the abduction and conversion to Islam of a 14 year-old Igbo school girl, Ifesinachi Ani.
Ifesinachi, a teenage secondary school girl, was abducted in Abuja and taken to Maiduguri, then Zaria, where she was reportedly converted to Islam and married off.

The linkman to the abductors, Baba Abdul, who has been arrested by the police, yesterday claimed that he sold the girl to scouts allegedly sent by the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji (Dr.) Shehu Idris.

However, the Secretary to the monarch, Alhaji Shehu Garba (Dokajen Zauzzau) dismissed the claim, stressing that “we don’t know anything about that. How can you even believe such a thing?”

He asked our correspondent to come over to Zaria so that “we can see face-to-face and discuss such a matter. It is a serious matter and it is not possible to link the Emir with such a trash”.

However, Police sources informed The AUTHORITY that Baba Abdul told the Police investigators during interrogation that “I sold the girl to them”, but has not been able to disclose how much he collected from the deal up till the time of filing this report.

According to the sources, Baba Abdul maintained that the scouts told him they were from the Emir of Zazzau and that they were looking for young children, especially girls, from the southern parts of the country to convert to Islam and marry.

“I was able to get the girl (Ifesinachi) first, to believe that I was offering assistance to her and her family. This is because her mother does not have any serious means of livelihood apart from the local Igbo beans, ‘okpa’, she is selling. And because we live close by each other and I was able to convince her (Ifesinachi) and she followed every instruction I gave her.

“I also showered her with gifts but warned her not to tell her mother and when I discovered that she was doing what I asked her to do, I took the next move, which made her to hate her mother.

“It was after I had done these preliminary things I was supposed to do, that I sold the girl to them (the scouts). They took her away and finally, I learnt they took her to Zaria and that is where they told me she is at the moment”.
This informed why The AUTHORITY called the Ciroman Zazzau who denied knowledge of the issue and referred us to the Emir’s secretary who vehemently denied Baba Abdul’s claims and link with the Emirate.

The AUTHORITY ON Sunday had reported the sinister activities of a band of syndicate abductors whose primary objective is to lure Christian teenagers and minors from the southern parts of the country and force them to embrace Islam and marry them off. This story led the Police to arrest the Abuja-based, self-styled Islamic cleric, Baba Abdul, who facilitated Ifesinachi’s abduction from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Initially, the abductors made the girl’s mother to believe that the 14-year-old SS-2 student of Government Secondary School, Apo Resettlement, was taken to Maiduguri, but it was later discovered that she was actually taken to Zaria in Kaduna State.

The AUTHORITY on Sunday had exclusively reported that Mrs. Ani, Ifesinachi’s mother, said her daughter informed her via GSM short message (sms) a few days after her abduction that she was whisked out of Abuja to Maiduguri.

Ifesinachi’s mother confirmed that she used the same telephone line to call her daughter’s abductors asking them to allow her see Ifesinachi but they refused, telling her that her daughter was in good health and has been converted to Islam, married off and was now attending an Islamic school where they paid N35,000.

She also told our Editorial Board when Barrister Amarachi of May Child Safety Initiative (MSI), an Abuja-based NGO, brought her to the head office complex of The AUTHORITY Media and Publishing Limited, that she discovered the pictures of her daughter adorned in hijab and posted on the internet as proof that they have actually converted her daughter to Islam. Mrs. Ani confirmed the pictures of the girl in hijab to be those of her daughter.

The AUTHORITY, in the course of the investigations, had also called the same telephone line (08060598215), registered in the name of Ngozi Yellow Osegbere, and a female voice who speaks Igbo, Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri and Beriberi Languages responded.
She wondered why the reporter detailed to speak with her should feign ignorance of the reward of converting people of other tribes to Islam, especially as he claimed that he was a Muslim. Our encounter with the woman was reproduced in The AUTHORITY on Sunday.

ICPC Freezes SURE-P Directors’ Accounts, Seizes Vehicles Over N3bn Fraud

ICPC Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission has begun a probe into the activities of directors and senior officials of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme.

It was learnt that the ICPC had frozen the accounts of some of the officials while some vehicles had been seized from them.

SURE-P was set up by the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan in February 2012 after nationwide protests followed the hike in the prices of petroleum products.

The programme was scrapped by President Muhammadu Buhari in November last year.
The SURE-P was mandated to convert saved fuel subsidy money to jobs, roads and other people-oriented programmes but became political during the build-up to the 2015 elections.

A source in the ICPC told our correspondent on Wednesday that the probe started after the commission received information that huge funds were embezzled by the officials.

The source added, “We have frozen the bank accounts of some of the officials while we have started seizing some vehicles from them. Our plan is to seize about 200. Presently, we have seized about 30.”

Our correspondent, who visited the ICPC on Wednesday, counted about 34 vehicles parked on the premises of the commission.
Some of the vehicles included Sport Utility Vehicles, Hilux vans, salon cars and ambulances.

Our correspondent learnt that the probe was in connection with a N3bn fraud allegedly involving the Federal Ministry of Finance and the SURE-P Graduate Internship Scheme.
The money, it was learnt, was meant for the payment of the participants.

It was gathered that the money was meant to pay the allowances of 17,500 participants for eight months, which never got to them.
The SURE-P GIS is a component of the SURE-P domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Finance.

The immediate past Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Anastasia Nwobiala, is already in court over the Nigeria Immigration recruitment scam, which led to the death of about 20 graduate applicants.

Also, about N4.9bn was said to have been extorted from 51,000 applicants, recruited as Federal Task Force officers for the protection of the SURE-P/Federal Road Maintenance Agency projects during the build-up to the last elections.

The aggrieved employees, in a petition, said they were forced to purchase the FTF forms, which were supposed to be free at the rate N30,000 each despite their impoverished situation, only to be employed, used and abandoned.

The petition reads in part, “We wish to cry out and seek for your urgent help over the fraudulent extortion from us and dehumanisation of our lives under the SURE-P/FERMA employment programme, named Federal Task Force by the above-listed names and other officers (Directors) on the following pretences and tricks.

“We were recruited and employed for the past three years without any training allowances; no salary and other allowances were paid to us.

“We were mandated to pay for the Presidency SURE-P/FERMA Task Force forms.

“We bought the forms with inscription ‘NOT FOR SALE’ boldly written on it at an average amount of N30,000 each.”
Some of the task force commanders have since fled the country.

A former Chairman of SURE-P, Christopher Kolade, had said last year that he resigned his position in 2013 because its operations were becoming tainted with corruption and politics, thereby losing its credibility.

He said some officials of the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan were practising “something that was lower than the transparency” expected of an interventionist agency like SURE-P.

He had stated, “When I discovered that there were individuals in the system that were practising something that was lower than the transparency that we went in with, I raised the issues; and I discovered that political affiliations and things made this difficult.”

The former SURE-P boss cited an instance when the agency decided to employ 5,000 youths from every state of the federation.
According to him, when it commenced, he informed the Presidency that the arrangement it adopted was not acceptable but he was overruled.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the ICPC, Mrs. Rasheedat Okoduwa, said she could not comment on the matter.

24 Sins Committed By Jonathan, Wike And PDP - APC

The All Progressives Congress in Rivers state has listed 24 sins committed by former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, the incumbent governor of the state, Nyesom Wike and their political party, Peoples Democratic Party against the people of the state.

APC claims that the duo of Jonathan and Wike have committed gross sins against Rivers State without any justification and should pay for these sins during the 19th March, 2016 rerun election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, the state capital by the state chairman of APC, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, the 24 sins corruption, lack of political will etc.

Here are the sins listed by APC:

1. President Jonathan failed to muster the courage and political will in a PDP-controlled National Assembly to see to the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) in the over six years of his administration to demonstrate his hatred for the Niger Delta region knowing that communities in Rivers State will benefit from the bill.
2 The East/West Road, especially Eleme-Onne axis in Rivers State, was not only abandoned but was a nightmare to travellers and commuters.
3 Bodo-Bonny Federal Road was completely abandoned just because it is situated in Rivers State.
4. Refusal to refund to the State Government over 90 billion naira used in the dualisation of Ikwerre-Owerri Road approved by late President Yar’Adua and other Federal Roads in the State executed by the State to ease the sufferings of the people of Rivers State.
5. Wickedly stopped Train 7 at NLNG Bonny and the loss of jobs to our people and revenue to Government.
6 Non-implementation of UNEP Report on the clean-up of Ogoni land despite all the pleas by our people and the International Community – just to punish the Ogonis and Rivers State irrespective of their overwhelming support for him during the 2011 elections.
7 Lack of any visible Federal Government project in Rivers State throughout his over six years as President of Nigeria. Instructively, of all the states Dr Jonathan has visited in the course of his re-election campaign, it was only in Rivers that he could not name a single development project he initiated, not to talk of executing.
8. Ceding of oil wells belonging to Rivers to Bayelsa and Abia states to ensure that the revenue accruing to the State was reduced to nothing.
9. Abandoned construction of the Port Harcourt International Airport after completing other airports started at the same time with it. The airport has thus become an eyesore and the worst airport in the entire world. Pictures of the current state of the Airport attached explain the level of hatred Dr Jonathan has for Rivers State and her people.
10. Turning the Port Harcourt axis of Enugu-Port Harcourt Express Road into a death trap. The pictures attached of the bad state of the road explain everything.

11. Posting and encouraging the excesses of the tyrannical Police Commissioner Joseph Mbu during his inglorious days in the State.
12. Supporting the impunity of daily killing, maiming of members of Rivers APC by the Police under the watch of Dan Barure then Commissioner of Police of the State
13. Supporting every imaginable act of impunity in the State, including the plot by five State Assembly members to impeach the Speaker in a House of 31 members.
14. Seizing and grounding the planes of the State for no just cause.
15. Harassing and intimidating the then Governor of Rivers State (Rt. Hon. Amaechi) for no just cause and even supporting the splitting of the Governors Forum into two just to ensure that Governor Amaechi, who was duly elected by his colleagues, does not have an easy reign as the Chairman of the Forum.
16. Refusal to allow the then Governor of the state to construct the Federal Road that leads to the Kalabari Kingdom just to ensure that during the rainy season the Kalabaris will not have a road to their place.

17..Refusal to refund the State the money used to construct the smooth, beautiful dual carriageway from Omerelu to Port Harcourt – particularly up to the Airport Junction from Owerri in Imo State, which the Federal Government abandoned just because Rivers State people ply that road.
18. Refusal to refund the money used by Rivers State to construct the Ahoada/Elele Alimini Federal Road and the interchange (Flyover) at Obiri Ikwerre.
19. Refusal to attend to the poor state of the Onne – Port Harcourt component of the East/West Road. This is the road that services the Port Harcourt Refinery from where petroleum products are supplied to the South East and parts of the South South. That is the road that leads to the Onne Free Zone and to Okrika, the home Local Government of Dame Patience Jonathan, Nigeria’s former First Lady.
20. Turning a blind eye while his party continues to kill, bomb and disrupt APC rallies.
21. Against the spirit of equity, unity, justice and fair play, Dr Jonathan and his wife, Damee patience Jonathan imposed Chief Nyesome Wike a cancellous fellow from the Ikwerre tribe as PDP candidate and Governor of Rivers State, knowing very well that the former Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, was also of Ikwerre extraction and that with Chief Wike as Governor that the Ikwerre tribe will governed Rivers State for 16 years to the detriment of other tribes and sections of the State. This shows that Dr Jonathan and his son and unjust party do not wish Rivers State any good.
22. Former President Jonathan released all the N25 Billion that accrued from the principle of derivation from the five Soku Oil Wells that rightly belong to Rivers State kept in reserve for Rivers State and Bayelsa State were all paid to Bayelsa State his home State to prove his hatred for Rivers State
23. As a President, Dr Jonathan continued to under fund the NDDC to ensure that Rivers State and in extension the Niger Delta region is not developed, till the time he left office, over N700B owed by the Federal Government was not paid to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)
24. Refused to empower and fund the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs initiated by the Yar-Adua’s administration. The then Minister of Niger Delta once stated that the N41.7B due to the Ministry was not paid until Dr Jonathan left office to ensure that 90 percent of the projects initiated by the Ministry were not executed by the Ministry in Rivers State and other Niger Delta States
Ikanya said: “These, amongst other wicked acts against Rivers State for reasons only to be explained by Dr Jonathan are why no PDP should be voted for this Saturday’s poll.
He then said: “For the record, Dr Jonathan is from Bayelsa, a sister State to Rivers. He is married to Dame Patience Jonathan, who is from Rivers State and having schooled in UNIPORT and lectured in the State before joining politics; one would have expected him to be a key factor in the development of Rivers State after the State gave him the highest number of votes in the 2011 presidential election though not shockingly, he was the greatest undoing of his party in the 2015 general election.”

University Of Ibadan Expels 80 Students

Eighty students were expelled from the University of Ibadan at the end of the last academic session for poor academic performance.
Vice Chancellor of Nigeria’s premier University, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, disclosed this today at the matriculation of 4008 students for the 2015/ 2016 session. The event which was postponed last week held at the university’s International Conference Centre.

Twenty-eight of the expelled students came from the sciences, while 20 came from Agriculture and Forestry department. Arts produced 13 of them, Basic Medical Sciences 1, Public Health 1, Social Sciences 6, Education 4, Technology 5, and Veterinary Medicine 2.

Olayinka told the freshmen that other reasons students could lose their studentship include: examination misconduct, unruly behavior, indecent behavior, vandalism, miscellaneous hall offences, unauthorized use/displacement/damage to university property, pilfering, insubordination, direct sale of bed space/squatting in halls of residence, membership of secret cult(s) on campus, illegal participation in the National Youth Service Programme, illegal registration as full-time student, and infringement of other university regulations.

“Any of the under-listed is a criminal offence which must be referred to the Police: fraud, theft, burglary, assault occasioning bodily harm, murder, membership of a secret cult inside or outside campus, possession of fire-arms, arson, rape, possession and/or use of hard drug and drug trafficking and other criminal offences”.

Olayinka advised the new students tasting freedom for the first time that freedom is not absolute.
“Those of you who are leaving home for the first time would realize that you are now exposed to enjoy a measure of freedom, which you may not have enjoyed before, as you are no longer under the watchful eyes of your parents. This freedom, however, has its limitations. In other words, your freedom ends at the point where you trample on the fundamental human right of others, or when you infringe on the rules and regulations of the University”.

He urged the new students to be studious.

“Let me inform you that at the University of Ibadan, we do not tell students what to think. You have to learn to think for yourselves. Our teaching is designed to produce intellectual self-reliance-to teach you how to learn and how to take charge of your thinking. We encourage you to be independent in your judgment and critical in your analysis. We work to help you develop these skills here at UI, and we hope you will retain them for life. They will continue to serve you as you experience a world that is constantly and rapidly changing. I, therefore, want to charge you not to restrict yourselves to your field of study alone so as to profit maximally from the numerous activities that will be presented to you throughout the duration of your course in the university”.

He warned the students to comport themselves in a manner that is befitting of an undergraduate student and or new postgraduate student of this premier institution, as the university would not tolerate any act of hooliganism and wanton destruction of properties – all in the name of students’ demonstration, indecent dressing, prostitution and or any other social vices”.
Olayinka also warned students against cultism and sexual harassment.

“Cultism by all estimation is evil and those who associate themselves with it are also evil. For this reason, you should not go into any relationship without thorough investigation. The approach employed is that the cultists camouflage in different colors to recruit members. You should live a modest life and avoid flaunting your financial disposition in public, as this is a veritable attraction to the hoodlums who engage in cultism”.

The 4008 students admitted by the university this year rank the highest in recent times as admission was pegged at 3000.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that out of 23,219 students that made 200 and above that were invited for Post-UTME, 19,292 sat for the exam out of which 3,225 were given admissions adding additional 783 admitted were from 2,512 applicants received from Direct entry.
“Those that make the institution first and second choice with score 180 and above were 32,587. Those that make it first and second choice with score 200 and above invited for Post-UTME were 23,219. Candidates who sat for the Post-UTME were 19,292 and candidates that were cleared for admission were 3,225. 2,512 applied through Direct entry and those offered admission were 783”.

“A breakdown of the undergraduate admission on a faculty-by-faculty basis are: Agriculture and Forestry 408, Arts 618, Medicine 550, Education 784, Law 147, Pharmacy 90, Science 571, Technology 369, The Social Sciences 351, and Veterinary Medicine 120, totalling, 4,008”.

"Gender Equality Bill Will Be Re-Presented" – Saraki

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has said that the gender equality bill, which was thrown out by the Senate on Tuesday will be reintroduced to the Senate after being redrafted.

The bill, which was sponsored by the Senate Minority Whip, Biodun Olujimi (PDP, Ekiti South), seeks to empower women politically and economically, as well as grant them equal opportunities with men in diverse human endeavours.

But it was rejected after Senators argued that most of its provisions were in conflict with the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, the same reason given by lawmakers in the Seventh Senate, when similar bill was also rejected.

However, Saraki, who said he met with Olujimi in the morning today to discuss the bill, noted that the bill could still be passed after modifications.

“I have it on good authority that Senator Biodun Olujimi who introduced this bill will reintroduce it after re-drafting it to address some of the reservations that were expressed on the floor of the Senate,” Saraki was quoted as saying in a statement by his Special Adviser on Gender, Ms. Fatima Kakuri.

In the statement, which was posted on his Facebook page, Saraki said some parts of the bill that were crucial to the development of the nation.
He, however, explained that the bill was rejected because of some provisions.

He said, “As I said during the International Womens Day last week, I am of the opinion that there are substantial parts of the bill that are crucial to the development of our nation such as the equal access to education, strengthening of the laws on violence against women, ending abduction of girls, sustenance and promotion of entrepreneurship opportunities, gender mainstreaming and gender equality, female participation in governance, among others.

“Unfortunately, the bill suffered a slight set back because there were some parts of the Bill that some Senators disagreed with along the lines of religion and tradition. The beauty of democracy is that it gives us the opportunity to consider different opinions and this bill can still be represented and reconsidered on the floor of the Senate.”

The bill was entitled, “A bill for an Act to Incorporate and enforce certain provisions of the United Nations Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, the Protocol of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the rights of women in Africa, and other matters connected therewith, 2016 (SB. 116).

Kenyan Blogger Blasts Nigerian Men After One Filmed A Kenyan Girl Dancing Unclad

A Kenyan political commentator and blogger, Cyprian Nyakundi has viciously attacked Nigerian men after a video emerged of a Kenyan girl being allegedly filmed by a Nigerian "conman". Below is what he wrote...

"Further to our exposè recently where we revealed how Nigerian men trick naive, silly Kenyan women and rope them into their zone by lacing condons with narcotics, a video has emerged of a Kenyan girl embarrassing herself so as to please a Nigerian conman in Nairobi.

"Please note that other than those who work in corporates, many Nigerians in the country are conmen, involved in the business of drugs, fake currency and fraud.
They work with a network of senior police officers and Government officials.
We post this video not to embarrass the young naive silly Kenyan girl selling her soul to the devil, but as a deterrent measure for other girls liaising with Nigerians for short-term thrills. No Kenyan man wants to marry or be associated with a woman who has been with a Nigerian.

"Many Kenyan women who are sexually-deprived and morally-bankrupt have departed from our cultural norms to seek love, attention and validation from third-rate Nigerians, using the notion of berating Kenyan men as being incomparable. Such women are outcasts and should not be integrated with he rest of us. Beginning with Vera Sidika & Huddah Monroe, let these women immigrate to Nigeria, where they belong.

"We also serve notice to leading media house executives. Wachira Waruru and Linus Kaikai are perhaps the Number 1 scum of corporate Nairobi. We don’t want to see Nigerian movies on our big screens again. You will need to travel to Nigeria and tell us how many Riverwood movies show on Nigerian TV"

Fulani Herdsmen Kill 2, Sack 25 Villages In Benue

By Peter Duru

MAKURDI—Despite the outcry that trailed the killings and sacking of Agatu communities by suspected Fulani militia, the marauders have, again, laid siege to Logo Local Government Area of the state, killing two and sacking over 25 villages.

Fulani-herdsman The attackers also rendered close to 3,000 homeless after several houses and huts were razed in the affected villages. Vanguard learned that the invaders have taken over the affected villages in an incursion that reportedly started about four days ago at Ukemberegya, Bwarer, Mbawar, Gov and Gambe Tiev communities.

A victim of the attack, Mrs. Terungwa Torhemba, who spoke to Vanguard yesterday in Makurdi, through an interpreter, said the armed herdsmen had completely occupied Abiam Koya, Iordye, Nyakoo and Mkpikpa.

Others are Afom, Uzaagir, Ugbende Mue, Dam, Shaausu, Ukme, Chenbe, Anwen, Sebungen Ubosha, Chia, Asemngoroko and Inderkar. According to Torhemba, “they attacked us four days ago, killing our people.

So many cannot be located at the moment; we have also lost all of our belongings, farm produce and farmland to the well-armed herdsmen who have completely taken over our villages.

“At the moment we have no source of livelihood because they have also converted our farm land to grazing settlements for their cattle.”
The Caretaker Chairman of the council, Simon Ugba, said two person had been confirmed dead in the attack, adding that his administration was overwhelmed by the number of displaced persons.

Ugba, who asserted that no designated camp had been created for the displaced persons, said the council was working in close collaboration with the state government to provide succour to victims and sued for assistance from public spirited individuals and organisations.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Moses Yamu, said he was yet to get full details of the attack.

Soldiers Put Drip On Colleague Injured In Battle With Boko Haram (pic)

Nigerian soldiers in the north-eastern part of Nigeria fighting insurgency have displayed a high sense of affection for a colleague injured in battle while the operation was active.

This is how Nigerian troops fighting Boko Haram demonstrated resilience by supporting their wounded colleague at BHT Camp, Bulasari after clearing Golgore in Yobe State.

Despite still engaged in battle, the soldiers were quick to respond to an injured colleague by putting him on IV drip right there on the battle ground while heavy fighting was still on-going.

This act was highly commended by all who have seen the photo online.

The troops have recently made a tremendous progress as they continue in routing members of the Boko Haram sect from their enclaves.

Peter Okoye Reveals Only Thing That Can End Their Bitter Fight

Psquare’s former manager, Howie T, has revealed in a new interview, the only thing that can end the bitter Psquare split, and make the brothers, Paul and Peter Okoye work together as a team again.

The Nigerian pop duo, Psquare, has already gone their separate ways, flaunted different managements and released solo songs after a fallout involving their elder brother Jude Okoye on social media. In turn, their actions caused a lot of drama and left fans praying for Africa’s most beloved pop group.

Thenet.ng held a phone conversation with Howie T and in it, Howie revealed Peter's side of the story
and the only condition for a Psquare reunite.

Howie was Psquare's first-ever manager after they won a Benson & Hedges talent hunt in 2001. He managed the duo from 2001 to 2005, before Jude Okoye took over as the band’s manager.

Here are excerpts from his chat with Thenet.ng's chief correspondent, Dayo Showemimo:

Well, the guys in question are adults, married with children, so I think we should respect their opinion. And the truth is, I believe they know what they are doing’.

When I saw Peter’s Tweets, I called him and even went to see him to talk to him about it. He said Jude is the problem that he doesn’t have any issue with Paul’.

He told me that in a normal setting, a manager is supposed to be their employee and not the other way round, but Jude always uses his influence as their elder brother to boss over them. He also said managers collect between 15 – 25 % of an artiste’s income but in their case they share everything equally and he’s not happy with that sharing formula’.

‘In my opinion I think Peter is just trying to prove a valid point. He told me that he turned down a show Jude got them in Finland and when they called them for the Dubai show, he told the organisers what it takes to get Peter and Paul, what it takes to get Peter or Paul alone’. \

Secondly, things like this messes up an artiste’s creativity, Peter is a composer, dancer and singer, when they sit down to vote on songs that’ll make their album, Paul and Jude vote for more of Paul’s songs than Peter’s and these are the things that pisses him off.
It has gone beyond just beef now, there’s a lot of ego at play’.

In my opinion, for peace to reign, why can’t Jude just leave them alone, Peter has told me that if they change Jude today, there’ll be Psquare tomorrow and sadly the only person that can talk to them is their mother and she’s dead’.
Well, 20 children cannot play together for 20 years’.

I Usually Helped Badeh Convert N558m From Staff Salaries To Dollars, Witness Tells Court

Salisu Abdullahi, a retired air commodore, has told Justice Okon Abang of the federal high court, Abuja, that Alex Badeh, while he was the chief of air staff, “usually” instructed him to convert N558m to dollars and bring to his house.

Alex Badeh
The amount represented the leftover of funds meant for the monthly payment of staff salaries, said Abdullahi, who was director of finance and account of the Nigeria air force from October 2010 to December 2013.

Abdullahi, who is the first witness called by Rotimi Jacobs, the prosecution in the ongoing trial of Badeh, however, said that the instruction to convert the money to dollar was given to him verbally as it is custom in the military.

“We receive about N4bn monthly for the payment of salaries. Our total wage bill, when I was finance director, was above N2bn,” he explained.

“The balance of the money for personnel emolument was about N1.7bn‎. The sum of N558m was earmarked for the general administration of the chief of staff’s office monthly. The balance is proposed for disbursement to the units.

‎”‎In most cases the chief of air staff directs that the amount be exchange into US dollars and taken to the headquarters Nigeria air force camp‎. When this money is exchanged it is brought to me, and I take this money to the chief air staff at home- his official residence at Niger Barracks.

“As military officers we don’t request for any acknowledgment. In some cases, I do tell the finance officer to meet me at air house at Niger barracks with the money so that he can see when I hand over the money to the chief of air staff.

“The instruction to convert the money to dollar was not in writing. The chief of air gives many instructions that are not in writing. The instructions in writing are those requests forwarded to his office from the branches.

‎”When I came I met N120m earmarked for the office of the director of finance. It was part of the balance of personal emolument released monthly. But I rejected it. I asked that the money place under the control of the chief of staff for tours and visits, and other sundry issues.”

Senate Allocates N10bn To IDP's In North-east In 2016 Budget

ABUJA — THE Senate, yesterday, mandated its Committee on Appropriation to allocate the sum of N10 billion under service wide vote for the relocation and resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons,IDPs, returning to Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

The Red Chamber also urged the National Emergency Management Agency,NEMA, and the Refugees Commission to make special arrangement for repatriation and resettlement of Nigerian refugees in Cameroon, Niger and Chad. But the Senate asked the committee to include IDPs in Taraba,Plateau,Benue and Nasarawa states as beneficiaries in the allocated amount.

The Senate action was sequel to a motion, tagged: “Interim financial and material support/assistance to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, returnees in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states”, presented for consideration during plenary by the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume,APC, Borno South and eight others from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

The managers of the Victim Support Fund have been directed as well to allocate reasonable amount of money from the fund for immediate relocation and resettlement of the IDPs, pending the short and medium term plans they may have. Other IDP centres across different states of the federation are expected to benefit from the proposed N10 billion and other other intervention funds when it eventually released by the executive.

Sponsors of the motion, in their lead debate, said the returning IDPs need immediate and interim financial and material assistance in terms of cash transfer and food relief to start their lives all over again in the short term before the intervention from the proposed North East Development Commission ,PINE. Lead sponsor of the motion, Ali Ndume, in his remark, said: “These IDPs from these states ran away from their various , from their various homes, leaving everything they own behind with the hope of returning in short time, but ended up losing everything to the Boko Haram insurgents.

“The displaced persons’ houses and other physical properties, like vehicles machineries, buildings and almost everything have been destroyed or vandalized by the insurgents, Boko Haram. Most or all the affected persons are relatively poor with no savings, source of income or gainful employment,” the lead sponsor, Ndume said in his remarks.

Considering the five-prayer motion, the Senate urged the federal government to release grains from the strategic grain reserve to the affected states. Also, it directed the appropriate committees to write a letter of appreciation to the embassies of the host countries where the refugees are accommodated.

It also urged the victim support fund to allocate reasonable amount from the fund for immediate relocation and resettlement for the IDPs pending the short and medium term plans, they might have.

Am On Tour To Understand Causes Of Nigeria’s Epileptic Power Supply: Fashola

Nigeria’s Power Minister, Babatunde Fashola, has stated that he’ll do all in his power to end the epileptic power supply bedeviling the nation.

When quizzed recently by newsmen whether there would be an end to the epileptic power supply in the country, the minister noted that having been properly briefed “in papers, files and memos” since he assumed office, of the situation in the sector, he had taken it upon himself to go round the country and have an on the spot assessment of the situation.

He however noted that what he had seen so far had given him hope that there would be light at the end of the tunnel.

“This problem can be solved, it is a problem that has challenged us for a long time, not only am I going around to understand the situation, am at Ugwuaji now in Enugu, I’m going around to understand what I’m supposed to manage, I’ve been briefed in papers, in files and in memo, am going from power plants to power plants, from transmission sites to transmission sites, what I see convinces me that this problem can be solved, I’m optimistic that it can be solved, it just needs for us as a people to understand the system better and know how it works.

“I am going to be dedicating my time to breaking down all technical issues that have been sounding so heavy over decades so that the average Nigerian can understand how the system works. Our people must know that if people break down pipelines, you know that you are breaking the system, no matter how angry you are, a broken pipeline is going to affect you because you won’t have power, if people feel that the best way to secure employment for their colleagues in the union is to shut down the power plants, the truth is that they are going to hurt more people than the people they seek to protect.

“If people think that if there is a restructuring going on in any government agency, and they fear that most of their colleagues will lose work and the answer is to shut down gas stations, the truth is that more people that they seek to protect would be hurt than those they want their jobs secured, for me everybody must understand how your action or inaction affects the system, once this is done, I think I see a better tomorrow clearly,” he noted.

Hidden History: Former US President, Thomas Jefferson, Raped A Young Black Girl

Thomas Jefferson: The Face of a Rapist

Americans look at Thomas Jefferson and see the one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence, a statesman, a former president and one of the founding fathers,’ however; when I look at him, I see the face of a rapist. When Jefferson first met Sally Hemings, his slave through inheritance, she would have been no more than 15 or 16 years old. It is rumoured that when she returned from France with him, that she was already pregnant with his child.

It was widely suggested within his own life time that he kept a light skinned negro concubine. You see, Sally was 3/4 white and was described as a handsome light skinned woman with long dark hair in one of the few known descriptions of her. Jefferson’s children through his wife Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson, denied the relationship, however; Jefferson himself did not publicly answer the rumours. The only slaves that Jefferson freed were the children of Hemings and he petitioned the government for two of her sons to stay in Virginia after emancipation. At the time, a slave had to leave the state within one year of manumission.

There are those that to this day vehemently deny that Jefferson fathered Sally’s six children despite the DNA evidence. It is my belief that such denial is not based in the simple fact that it would prove that he was a lecher but that he chose a woman of color.

On the other side of the coin are those that believe the oral, written, and DNA evidence. They often refer to the relationship as an illicit love affair, citing that Sally had the opportunity to stay in France where slavery was outlawed, rather than returning to the United States with Jefferson. Assuming that Sally had chosen to stay in Paris, what would an uneducated 1/4 negresss do with no money to support herself and her unborn child? She chose to return because Jefferson gave his word that he would free her children and offer her a life of comfort relative to the other slaves at Monticello.

Jefferson may have felt love for Sally but how can we possibly term this relationship a love affair? Once they returned to the US, he had the power to have her flogged, or even put to death. At anytime he could have sold her children away from her. For a relationship based in love to exist, both parties must be equal and due to the power differential between Jefferson and Hemings what occurred cannot be described as anything other than rape. Some have even had the nerve to refer to Hemings as the first Black first lady of the United States as a way of further legitimizing the relationship between the two, however; to sanitize it and call it anything other than rape, is to once again violate her spirit.

Jefferson was not the first or last White man to sneak into the slave cabins. One of the reasons White women argued so vehemently for the abolition of slavery, was to save the poor overwhelmed White man from the negro temptress. It was not uncommon to see near white or light skinned children resembling the master working on the plantation. The Black woman was and still is blamed for her own rape. Victim blaming began with women of color and continues to this day.

No matter how many times Black women have angrily contested the use of the term love affair between Hemings and Jefferson, it continues to be the most common descriptor by those who believe the DNA evidence. This assumes that Hemings actually had the power to deny Jefferson sexual access, or that Jefferson had a right to Sally’s body for the purposes of sexual gratification. Both suppositions are erroneous. Due to the patriarchal nature of gender relations, many men believe that they exist with the right to access women’s bodies and that is specifically grounded in the power imbalance between the genders. If we can acknowledge in a modern context that a power imbalance exists between men and women, how much more likely is it that this same imbalance existed between Jefferson and Hemings?

Some may look back at Jefferson and simply claim that he was a man of his time and that he should not be judged outside of historical context, however; in my mind a rapist is a rapist. What he did at the time may not have been considered a violation due to current race and gender relations, however; today we can correctly name his actions. Sally did not have the power to consent to his advances even if she was so inclined; this simple fact must be affirmed not only to honour the memory of Hemings but to change the social understanding that Black women’s bodies are unrapeable. We are not naturally licentious whores who exist to fulfill the sexual fantasies of depraved racist men. We are women that must be accorded the right to control over our bodies without punishment for any decisions we make in that regard.
Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: A Brief Account

The claim that Thomas Jefferson fathered children with Sally Hemings, a slave at Monticello, entered the public arena during Jefferson's first term as president, and it has remained a subject of discussion and disagreement for two centuries. Based on documentary, scientific, statistical, and oral history evidence, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation (TJF) Research Committee Report on Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings (January 2000) remains the most comprehensive analysis of this historical topic. Ten years later, TJF and most historians believe that, years after his wife’s death, Thomas Jefferson was the father of the six children of Sally Hemings mentioned in Jefferson's records, including Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston Hemings.

Historical Background
In September 1802, political journalist James T. Callender, a disaffected former ally of Jefferson, wrote in a Richmond newspaper that Jefferson had for many years "kept, as his concubine, one of his own slaves." "Her name is Sally," Callender continued, adding that Jefferson had "several children" by her.

Although there had been rumors of a sexual relationship between Jefferson and an enslaved woman before 1802, Callender's article spread the story widely. It was taken up by Jefferson's Federalist opponents and was published in many newspapers during the remainder of Jefferson's presidency.

Jefferson's policy was to offer no public response to personal attacks, and he apparently made no explicit public or private comment on this question (although a private letter of 1805 has been interpreted by some individuals as a denial of the story). Sally Hemings left no known accounts.

Jefferson's daughter Martha Jefferson Randolph privately denied the published reports. Two of her children, Ellen Randolph Coolidge and Thomas Jefferson Randolph, maintained many years later that such a liaison was not possible, on both moral and practical grounds. They also stated that Jefferson's nephews Peter and Samuel Carr were the fathers of the light-skinned Monticello slaves some thought to be Jefferson's children because they resembled him.

The Jefferson-Hemings story was sustained through the 19th century by Northern abolitionists, British critics of American democracy, and others. Its vitality among the American population at large was recorded by European travelers of the time. Through the 20th century, some historians accepted the possibility of a Jefferson-Hemings connection and a few gave it credence, but most Jefferson scholars found the case for such a relationship unpersuasive.

Over the years, however, belief in a Thomas Jefferson-Sally Hemings relationship was perpetuated in private. Two of her children--Madison and Eston--indicated that Jefferson was their father, and this belief has been perpetuated in the oral histories of generations of their descendants as an important family truth.

DNA Evidence and Response
The results of DNA tests conducted by Dr. Eugene Foster and a team of geneticists in 1998 challenged the view that the Jefferson-Hemings relationship could be neither refuted nor substantiated . The study--which tested Y-chromosomal DNA samples from male-line descendants of Field Jefferson (Thomas Jefferson's uncle), John Carr (grandfather of Jefferson's Carr nephews), Eston Hemings, and Thomas Woodson--indicated a genetic link between the Jefferson and Hemings descendants. The results of the study established that an individual carrying the male Jefferson Y chromosome fathered Eston Hemings (born 1808), the last known child born to Sally Hemings. There were approximately 25 adult male Jeffersons who carried this chromosome living in Virginia at that time, and a few of them are known to have visited Monticello. The study's authors, however, said "the simplest and most probable" conclusion was that Thomas Jefferson had fathered Eston Hemings.

The DNA testing found no genetic link between the Hemings and Carr descendants, refuting Jefferson’s grandchildren’s assertion that his Carr nephews fathered Sally Hemings’s children.

Additionally, the DNA study found no link between the descendants of Field Jefferson and Thomas Woodson (1790-1879), whose family members have long held that he was the first son of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings. Madison Hemings, Sally's second-youngest son, said in 1873 that his mother had been pregnant with Jefferson's child (who, he said, lived "but a short time"wink when she returned from France in 1789. There is no indication in Jefferson's records of a child born to Hemings before 1795, and there are no known documents to support that Thomas Woodson was Hemings's first child.

Shortly after the DNA test results were released in November 1998, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation formed a research committee consisting of nine members of the foundation staff, including four with Ph.D.s. In January 2000, the committee reported that the weight of all known evidence--from the DNA study, original documents, written and oral historical accounts, and statistical data--indicated a high probability that Thomas Jefferson was the father of Eston Hemings, and that he was likely the father of all six of Sally Hemings's children listed in Monticello records--Harriet (born 1795; died in infancy); Beverly (born 1798); an unnamed daughter (born 1799; died in infancy); Harriet (born 1801); Madison (born 1805); and Eston (born 1808).

Since then, a committee commissioned by the Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society, after reviewing essentially the same material, reached different conclusions, namely that Sally Hemings was only a minor figure in Thomas Jefferson's life and that it is very unlikely he fathered any of her children. This committee also suggested in its report, issued in April 2001 and revised in 2011, that Jefferson's younger brother Randolph (1755-1815) was more likely the father of at least some of Sally Hemings's children.

From the Historical Record
The following summarizes what is known about Sally Hemings and her family.

Sally Hemings (1773-1835) was a slave at Monticello; she lived in Paris with Jefferson and two of his daughters from 1787 to 1789; and she had at least six children.

Sally Hemings's duties included being a nursemaid-companion to Thomas Jefferson's daughter Maria (ca. 1784-1787), lady's maid to daughters Martha and Maria (1787-1797), and chambermaid and seamstress (1790s-1827).

There are no known images of Sally Hemings and only four known descriptions of her appearance or demeanor.

Sally Hemings left no known written accounts. It is not known if she was literate.

In the few scattered references to Sally Hemings in Thomas Jefferson's records and correspondence, there is nothing to distinguish her from other members of her family.

Thomas Jefferson was at Monticello at the likely conception times of Sally Hemings's six known children. There are no records suggesting that she was elsewhere at these times, or records of any births at times that would exclude Jefferson paternity.

There are no indications in contemporary accounts by people familiar with Monticello that Sally Hemings's children had different fathers.

Sally Hemings's children were light-skinned, and three of them (daughter Harriet and sons Beverly and Eston) lived as members of white society as adults.

According to contemporary accounts, some of Sally Hemings's children strongly resembled Thomas Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson freed all of Sally Hemings's children: Beverly and Harriet were allowed to leave Monticello in 1822; Madison and Eston were released in Jefferson's 1826 will. Jefferson gave freedom to no other nuclear slave family.

Thomas Jefferson did not free Sally Hemings. She was permitted to leave Monticello by his daughter Martha Jefferson Randolph not long after Jefferson's death in 1826, and went to live with her sons Madison and Eston in Charlottesville.

Several people close to Thomas Jefferson or the Monticello community believed that he was the father of Sally Hemings's children.
Eston Hemings changed his name to Eston Hemings Jefferson in 1852.

Madison Hemings stated in 1873 that he and his siblings Beverly, Harriet, and Eston were Thomas Jefferson's children.
The descendants of Madison Hemings who have lived as African-Americans have passed a family history of descent from Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings down through the generations.

Eston Hemings's descendants, who have lived as whites, have passed down a family history of being related to Thomas Jefferson. In the 1940s, family members changed this history to state that an uncle of Jefferson's, rather than Jefferson himself, was their ancestor.
According to Madison Hemings, Sally's mother Elizabeth Hemings (1735-1807) was the daughter of an African woman and an English sea captain. By Madison Hemings's and other accounts, Sally Hemings and some of her siblings were the children of John Wayles, Thomas Jefferson's father-in-law, making her the half-sister of Jefferson's wife, Martha Wayles Jefferson (1748-1782). Elizabeth Hemings and her children lived at John Wayles' plantation during his lifetime.

Questions remain about the nature of the relationship that existed between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings; whether she had a child at Monticello shortly after they returned from France in 1789; and whether there is anything to connect Jefferson, Hemings, and Thomas Woodson.
